President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has congratulated the newly elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament following the conclusion of the parliamentary leadership elections.
In a statement released shortly after the swearing in, the President congratulated Oboth Oboth and Thomas Tayebwa upon their election and commended Members of Parliament for conducting the voting process peacefully and transparently.
“I congratulate the Rt. Hon. Speaker Jacob Oboth Oboth and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and thank the MPs for carrying out their mandate of voting peacefully and transparently,” President Museveni stated.
The President also noted that candidates backed by the ruling National Resistance Movement secured more votes than the party’s numerical strength in Parliament, suggesting that some legislators outside the party supported the NRM flag bearers during the election.
Museveni further referenced the performance of Norbert Mao, describing him as an ally whose participation influenced the final vote tally.
“The NRM candidates obtained more votes than the NRM members in the House, and I note the votes our ally Mao took away. We shall address this because we want a united Parliament that serves our people better,” the President added.
The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker marked one of the first major activities of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, attracting attention from both ruling party and opposition legislators.
Political analysts say the outcome strengthens the NRM’s influence within Parliament as the new House begins its legislative term. Meanwhile, leaders across the political divide have called for cooperation and unity in addressing national issues affecting Ugandans.
