Ugandan blogger and political commentator Ashburg Kato has expressed regret over what he described as betraying his long-time friend Bobi Wine, a relationship that once defined their close association in the early days of the People Power movement.

Ashburg, who was previously a strong supporter of Bobi Wine, admitted that their friendship suffered after he publicly distanced himself from the movement and later aligned with Uganda’s ruling political establishment. His decision at the time sparked criticism from supporters of Bobi Wine and the broader opposition movement.

Reflecting on the fallout, Ashburg acknowledged that his actions hurt a friendship that had lasted for years. He noted that beyond politics, he and Bobi Wine had shared a personal bond built on trust and mutual support.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, rose to prominence first as a musician before becoming one of Uganda’s most influential opposition politicians. His People Power movement later evolved into the National Unity Platform, a political party that has attracted strong support among young Ugandans.

The fallout between the two men in 2020 became a widely discussed topic on social media and in political circles, with many followers of the movement accusing Ashburg of abandoning the cause.

Although their relationship remains strained, Ashburg’s recent remarks suggest he still reflects on their past friendship with regret. The situation continues to be cited as an example of how Uganda’s intense political environment can test even the strongest personal relationships.
