The Embassy of Uganda in Berlin has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German football club VfB Einheit zu Pankow to promote Uganda’s tourism brand, “Explore Uganda – The Pearl of Africa”, through football, in a partnership aimed at enhancing Uganda’s visibility in Germany by featuring on the club’s kits.
Under the agreement, the Explore Uganda brand will feature on the kits of the club’s first men’s team and G2 youth team, creating an opportunity to showcase Uganda as an attractive tourism destination to football fans, local communities and people who are outside Germany.
The partnership offers an innovative approach to tourism promotion, using football’s popularity and influence to connect Uganda with international audiences. Through the visibility provided by the club’s teams, the “Explore Uganda – The Pearl of Africa” brand will be positioned within the German sporting community, helping to raise awareness of Uganda’s diverse tourism attractions and unique experiences.
Widely recognised as the Pearl of Africa, Uganda boasts rich natural and cultural heritage, including spectacular landscapes, wildlife, national parks, mountain gorillas, vibrant cultures, and adventure tourism opportunities. The country continues to position itself as a destination offering memorable experiences to travellers seeking nature, culture, adventure and authentic African hospitality.

The collaboration with VfB Einheit zu Pankow provides an additional platform through which these tourism offerings can be communicated to prospective visitors in Germany, one of Uganda’s important international markets. By integrating tourism promotion into football activities, the partnership seeks to reach audiences beyond conventional tourism advertising channels while creating opportunities for greater engagement with the Ugandan destination brand.
Beyond tourism promotion, the MoU is expected to contribute to strengthening relations between Uganda and Germany through sports diplomacy and community engagement. Football, as a universally recognised sport, offers an effective avenue for bringing people together, encouraging cultural exchange and building lasting connections between communities in the two countries.
The involvement of both the first men’s team and the G2 youth team also gives the initiative a broader community dimension, extending the visibility of Uganda’s tourism brand across different levels of the club’s sporting activities.
The three-year partnership underscores the Embassy of Uganda in Berlin’s commitment to exploring creative and sustainable avenues for promoting Uganda’s interests abroad, enhancing the country’s international image and deepening engagement with German institutions and communities.
It also highlights the growing importance of sports diplomacy as a complementary tool in advancing tourism marketing, cultural relations and international cooperation.
Through the “Explore Uganda – The Pearl of Africa” initiative, Uganda continues to strengthen its global destination identity and invite international audiences to discover the country’s exceptional natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and diverse tourism experiences.
The partnership with VfB Einheit zu Pankow is expected to provide a valuable platform for sustained engagement with German audiences while reinforcing the enduring friendship and cooperation between Uganda and Germany.
