The Ministry of Works and Transport has proposed the introduction of an automated driver monitoring system to improve road safety and address the rising number of road crashes.

The proposed system would track public service vehicle drivers’ journeys, driving hours, rest periods and speeding, with the aim of identifying and reducing risky driving behaviour.

The proposal was presented during a meeting between ministry officials and the Committee on Physical Infrastructure, which examined the alarming cases of road crashes recorded in July.

The meeting focused on the causes of fatal accidents, enforcement of transport regulations, road infrastructure, driver accreditation and measures being undertaken to improve road safety.

The Ministry’s Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety, Winston Katushabe, said drivers would be required to clock in at designated points along their routes.

According to Katushabe, the system would help monitor drivers’ working hours and rest periods, thereby addressing fatigue and reckless driving, which are among the factors contributing to road crashes.

The proposed monitoring system is part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Works and Transport to strengthen road safety measures and improve compliance with transport regulations.
