The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has strengthened its air capabilities following the commissioning of a new fleet of aircraft by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The commissioning ceremony marked another milestone in the UPDF’s military modernisation efforts, with the new fleet expected to enhance the Air Force’s operational efficiency and logistical capabilities.

Among the aircraft commissioned is the Let 410 transport aircraft, which is designed to improve the movement of personnel, equipment and supplies across the country.

The versatile aircraft can perform multiple roles, including serving as an air ambulance capable of carrying up to six stretcher patients and three seated patients. It can also be configured as a passenger aircraft with a capacity of 19 people, a VIP transport for eight passengers, a cargo aircraft, or a platform for paratrooper operations.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Gen. Kainerugaba urged the UPDF Air Force personnel to ensure the new aircraft are properly maintained to maximise their operational lifespan and effectiveness.

He also commended OMNIPOL for facilitating the acquisition of the aircraft, noting that the delivery was completed two months ahead of schedule.

The event was attended by the Commander Air Force, Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi, the Chief of Staff Air Force, and an OMNIPOL delegation led by Chairman Ondrej Panenka, alongside Mr. Valentin and Mr. Humphrey Nzeyi.

The commissioning of the new aircraft underscores Uganda’s continued investment in strengthening its national defence capabilities and reflects its commitment to enhancing air mobility, emergency response and national security through strategic partnerships with international allies.
