Inside the classroom, however, he was simply another pupil\u2014one who loved answering Social Studies questions and was always eager to be called upon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George was already the world\u2019s youngest king, having become the Omukama of Tooro at the age of three. Yet at school, the weight of the crown seemed far away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To his classmates, he was simply George\u2014the boy who laughed loudly, ran around the playground and shared his lunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the school bell rang, he joined the other children, his schoolbag hanging from one shoulder and his sweater untucked. The presence of his guards did little to change the ordinary childhood he enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At home, another part of his childhood unfolded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the balcony, he played pool with his older sister, Ruth. The two shared laughter and the simple joys of being siblings. For those moments, royal duties, ceremonies and the responsibilities of Tooro Kingdom were left behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there were his dogs\u2014three German Shepherds who cared nothing about royal titles. To them, he was simply their favourite human.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George would run through the garden with them, laughing as they chased around him. In those moments, he was not a king or a symbol of a centuries-old kingdom. He was simply a seven-year-old boy enjoying his childhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was George in 1999.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy in the green sweater would grow up to carry the responsibilities of his kingdom and serve his people for decades. For 31 years, he wore the crown as the Omukama of Tooro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But beyond the ceremonies, titles and history books, those closest to him remembered the boy\u2014the eager pupil with his hand raised in class, the brother playing pool on the balcony and the child running through the garden with his dogs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the kingdom mourns the passing of Rukirabasaija, memories of George remain a reminder that behind every crown is a human being, and behind the king was once a little boy who simply loved school, his sister and his dogs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crown may have defined his public life, but it was these ordinary childhood moments that captured the person behind it.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1999, a seven-year-old boy sat at the front of a classroom in Kampala, dressed in a green Aga Khan sweater, his hand raised eagerly as he waited to answer a question.
