{"id":4459,"date":"2026-08-22T16:42:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T13:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kampalatrends.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/22\/from-potential-to-performance-uganda-eyes-slice-of-1-57-trillion-global-it-export-market\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T16:42:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T13:42:00","slug":"from-potential-to-performance-uganda-eyes-slice-of-1-57-trillion-global-it-export-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kampalatrends.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/22\/from-potential-to-performance-uganda-eyes-slice-of-1-57-trillion-global-it-export-market\/","title":{"rendered":"From Potential to Performance: Uganda Eyes Slice of $1.57 Trillion Global IT Export Market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>By\u00a0Wadulo\u00a0Arnold Mark<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uganda is seeking to expand its share of the global Information Technology and IT-Enabled Services (IT\/ITES) market as government and private sector players develop strategies to position the country as a competitive global outsourcing hub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Uganda Free Zones and Export Promotions Authority (UFZEPA) convened a high-level symposium at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Thursday, August 20, 2026, under the theme, \u201cFrom Potential to Performance: Positioning Uganda as a Competitive Global IT &amp; ITES Export Hub.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uganda\u2019s IT and ITES exports currently stand at $48.5 million, compared with a global market valued at $1.57 trillion and an African regional market estimated at $9.2 trillion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brenda\u00a0Kabasinguzi, Manager of Export Marketing Services at UFZEPA, said Uganda\u2019s IT exports peaked at $55.4 million in 2023 before declining to the current level, highlighting the need for stronger support to grow the sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said Uganda remains competitive in the global outsourcing industry, ranking 24th in business process outsourcing (BPO) and 12th in\u00a0labour\u00a0competitiveness. The country is targeting an increase in BPO jobs from about 12,000 currently to 150,000 by 2030, with UFZEPA supporting the expansion through\u00a0specialised\u00a0BPO hubs, including ICT hubs across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UFZEPA Executive Director\u00a0Hez\u00a0Kimoomi\u00a0Alinda\u00a0said the shift from physical goods to services presents Uganda with an opportunity to increase its participation in international trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called for reforms in public sector policies, regulations and service delivery to create a more business-friendly environment capable of attracting investment into the sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we look at our policies, when we look at our regulations, when we act in a more corporate and business-like manner as a government, we\u2019ll be able to attract investment in this space,\u201d\u00a0Alinda\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Representing the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Sanjay\u00a0Tanna, Commissioner for Business Development and Quality Assurance Patrick Mugisha said the symposium marked the official beginning of implementing Uganda\u2019s 2025 National BPO Policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mugisha described BPO as a major opportunity for employment and trade, particularly given Uganda\u2019s youthful population, and urged the country to\u00a0maximise\u00a0opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol on trade in services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also called for greater investment in research and development to build intellectual property and strengthen Uganda\u2019s knowledge economy as the country pursues its long-term economic growth ambitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the private sector, Peter\u00a0Muhumuza\u00a0of\u00a0Roke\u00a0Telecom called for improved digital infrastructure and the removal of taxation bottlenecks affecting local exporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said Uganda\u2019s English-speaking workforce gives the country an advantage in the global services market, while emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) present new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muhumuza\u00a0noted that AI data\u00a0centres\u00a0require significant amounts of electricity and suggested that Uganda could leverage the power potential of the River Nile to support AI processing\u00a0centres\u00a0serving international markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also pointed to the ease of exporting digital services compared with physical commodities, citing a Ugandan company operating remotely from Lira that serves clients in Japan and Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stakeholders at the symposium agreed that stronger infrastructure, supportive policies, investment in skills and research, and closer public-private collaboration will be critical to transforming Uganda\u2019s existing IT capacity into a globally competitive export industry.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Wadulo\u00a0Arnold Mark Uganda is seeking to expand its share of the global Information Technology and IT-Enabled Services (IT\/ITES) market as government and private sector players develop strategies to position the country as a competitive global outsourcing hub.
