President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged government support\u00a0to the establishment of the Nonda Coffee Park in Nakaseke District, a\u00a0landmark agro-industrial project expected to transform Uganda\u2019s coffee\u00a0sector through large-scale value addition, job creation, and expanded\u00a0export markets.<\/p>\n

The commitment followed a meeting at State House, Entebbe with a\u00a0delegation from Nonda Coffee Park led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr.Tonny Miiro Kibuuka, who briefed the President on the progress of the\u00a0project and sought additional government support ahead of its\u00a0groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for October this year.<\/p>\n

The proposed coffee park, located on a 100-acre site in Butalangu Town\u00a0Council, Nakaseke District, is projected to become the largest single coffee\u00a0processing facility in East and Central Africa. Once completed, the plant will\u00a0have the capacity to process 42,000 metric tons of coffee annually, drawing\u00a0raw coffee from Uganda\u2019s central region and other coffee-growing areas.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Miiro, the project is part of the Great Uganda-Saudi Coffee\u00a0Corridor under the Value-at-Source Coffee Project, Uganda\u2019s flagship\u00a0private-sector-led industrialization initiative aimed at ensuring that a greater\u00a0share of the coffee value chain remains within the country before exports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President has committed his support to this project, particularly in\u00a0mobilizing coffee farming households to prepare for the increased demand\u00a0for coffee that will be required by the factory,\u201d Mr. Miiro said after the\u00a0meeting.<\/p>\n

He explained that unlike the traditional model where Uganda exports\u00a0largely unprocessed coffee beans, the Value-at-Source initiative seeks to\u00a0process coffee domestically, allowing the country to earn significantly more\u00a0from its leading export commodity.<\/p>\n

The coffee park represents an investment estimated at USD200 million,making it one of Uganda\u2019s largest agro-processing projects.\u00a0 Mr. Miiro said approximately USD160 million will be invested directly in the\u00a0development of the coffee park and related infrastructure on the 100-acre\u00a0site in Butalangu.<\/p>\n

The Government of Uganda is expected to contribute USD44 million, while\u00a0the remaining financing will come from private investors from the Kingdom\u00a0of Saudi Arabia.\u00a0Ready export market:<\/p>\n

One of the project\u2019s biggest advantages, according to Mr. Miiro, is that it\u00a0already has an established export market. He revealed that the processed\u00a0coffee from the facility is earmarked for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under\u00a0an existing commercial arrangement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project is already mapped to the off-take market in the Kingdom of\u00a0Saudi Arabia. There is a ready market waiting for the coffee because we\u00a0are the first Ugandan company to own coffee shops in the Middle East,\u201d he\u00a0said, adding that the company currently operates two Ugandan-branded\u00a0coffee shops in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

The facility is projected to generate annual revenues exceeding USD800\u00a0million, significantly increasing Uganda\u2019s foreign exchange earnings from\u00a0coffee exports.<\/p>\n

Construction has already commenced with preparatory works at the site,\u00a0and the project is expected to be completed within the next 24 months.\u00a0Mr. Miiro said preparations are also underway for the official<\/p>\n

groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for October, this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur purpose in meeting the President was to thank him for the support he\u00a0has committed to this project and also to inform him about the proposed\u00a0groundbreaking ceremony later this year,\u201d Mr. Miiro said.<\/p>\n

The meeting was attended by several senior government officials, including\u00a0the Attorney General, Hon. Sam Mayanja; Minister of Finance, Planning\u00a0and Economic Development, Hon. Henry Musasizi; Minister of Science,<\/p>\n
