A pall of sorrow hangs over Ndibarema Seed Secondary School after a devastating fire razed a boys’ dormitory in the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving dozens of students destitute but, miraculously, unharmed.
The blaze broke out at approximately 3:25 a.m. while the students were fast asleep. The fire, whose cause is yet to be determined, swept through the structure with terrifying speed, forcing the boys to flee for their lives with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
“We were sleeping when we heard people shouting ‘Fire! Fire!’,” recounted a trembling student who wished to remain anonymous. “By the time we got out, the whole dormitory was engulfed. We lost everything: our mattresses, our books, our uniforms, everything.”
Fortunately, the quick-thinking students managed to evacuate in time, and school authorities have confirmed that there were no injuries or fatalities. However, the material loss is total. The dormitory and all the personal belongings inside, including bedding, textbooks, scholastic materials, and clothing, were reduced to ashes.
Local police officers arrived at the scene promptly to manage the situation and secure the area, preventing any looting or further spread of the fire to nearby structures. However, their efforts to combat the flames themselves were severely hampered by the absence of a fire brigade service in the area. By the time any external help could be conceptualised, the building had already been destroyed.
The incident has left the school community in a state of shock. The loss of educational materials is a severe blow to the affected students, whose academic year is now in jeopardy.
“This is a huge setback for our school and a great loss for these children,” a school official stated, visibly distraught. “Many of these students come from humble backgrounds, and their parents cannot afford to replace these items easily. We are appealing to the government and well-wishers to come to our aid.”
Authorities have cordoned off the ruined dormitory as investigations into the cause of the fire begin. Police are working to determine if the incident was accidental or the result of foul play.
As the sun rose over the school, it illuminated a scene of devastation: smouldering ruins where a dormitory once stood and the ashen faces of students who must now grapple with the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from scratch.
The school administration is currently making arrangements to accommodate the displaced students temporarily, while an urgent appeal goes out to the public for donations of books, bedding, clothing, and other essentials.
